PERSONALITY: To begin with, Dio's overall mindset was greatly affected by the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father. His actions could best be described as nihilism. He has zero regard for the well-being of others, especially when it comes to getting what he wants. He has no qualms doing whatever it takes to get himself ahead.
Dio is ambitious. Even before he found his path in life, he wanted nothing more than to make his way to the top. He will do anything it takes to get ahead, including stepping on others to get what he wants. When given the slightest hint of an opportunity to get what he wants, he will jump on it. Opportunity doesn't even need to knock, he will beat opportunity to it. In his own mind, he's working two steps ahead of everyone else.
Dio is ruthless in everything he does. He will turn a person's friends against them, ruin their personal life, and destroy everything dear to them if it will further his means. He will stop at nothing to get his way or what he wants. Mercy is not a word in his vocabulary. If you are in his way, he will destroy you.
Dio is also very charismatic. He has a persona that he uses to draw people close to him. Whether or not he keeps these people around is another story entirely. His charisma is often described as "crushing" and he uses this to his advantage. He will use it to get people to do things for him or to surround himself with powerful people. This is something separate from his mutation.
When things don't go his way, Dio is very quick to anger. The moment someone starts to show a will of their own, he does what he can to strike it down. He uses violent means to exert his will, such as twisting someone's arm or hitting them without warning. He's not afraid to get into a fight and can very easily hold his own against most people.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Psychological manipulation. He's able to exert his will over others and has a presence that can be felt, even if the chosen target is unaffected by his actual ability. His power allows him to influence crowds, whether they be someone's friends (such as driving a person's friends away from them) or even a very large crowd (such as a protest group). Those who are more suspicious of his motives are much less likely to be influenced.
AU HISTORY: When Dio was still just a baby, his parents came across a wealthy family that had gotten into a serious wreck. The man's wife had died protecting their young baby. Dario originally had the intention of looting the vehicle and even took the woman's wedding ring from her finger, but the man came to and thanked Dario profusely for his kindness. He felt that he and his young son owed their lives to this man now and he insisted on keeping in touch. Even when Dario tried to sell that stolen ring and was jailed for it, the man refused to press charges and forgave him for it.
Dio was born into a poor family in England. His mother was kind and loving, however, his father, Dario, was not. He faced physical and verbal abuse on a constant basis. When Dio was about five years old, his mother died suddenly. He no longer had anyone to protect him from Dario's abuse. He grew jaded and hateful of humanity as a whole because of this.
He was sent out daily to find whatever work he could get, usually begging or betting on games, the money going straight to Dario's alcohol problem. Dio noticed something changing as he got older, though, and realized he could exert his influence over others. He could fool people into giving him money with this new found ability. It was strange, certainly, but he was determined to make something of himself with this.
Dario's health soon began to rapidly decline. Since he had no other family, Dario called in his final favor to the man he saved. It was decided that Dio would go live with the man and his son, the son being the same age as him. Dario died alone and Dio visited his grave long enough to spit on it. It would never be known that Dio was the one that had killed his own father, though, by slowly poisoning him. No one needed to know.
With his new found abilities, he soon began to make life miserable for the boy he lived with now. He forced away all of his friends and alienated him, even in the eyes on his own father. Dio knew that this ability made him better than human and he would use it to the fullest extent that he could. Through his own research, he discovered the Xavier Institute. He was not alone in his "mutation", something he refused to call it. Seeing as Dio was now the adopted son of a wealthy man, he could actually go. Dio phrased it as a boarding school, one that would allow him to thrive.
With his new goal in mind, he started life anew. His past didn't need to be known by anyone, no one cared to know. He could pretend to be one of the ones born with a silver spoon in their mouth. It would make his goals that much easier to achieve.
SAMPLE
1ST PERSON SAMPLE: How many of you were born into a life of privilege? How many of you that were lost that the moment your "loving" family found out you were better than human? How did that feel? Did you actually care about losing your "loved" ones or was it the fact you lost your comfortable life?
Now then, who considers their "mutation" a gift rather than a curse? That's what it is, you know. We're better than humans and what we were given makes that perfectly clear. To those that consider it a curse or something to hate: go back to normal society -- you're not needed.
THIRD PERSON SAMPLE: A new opportunity, something to exploit. This wasn't going to be a "life-changing" experience the way most people saw it. Dio was not here to "cope" with his mutation; he was here to push himself ahead. The resources here were more than he could ever hope to get back in England. There were many that were naive and easily to manipulate, even without the assistance Dio gained from his enhancement.
Unlike most of those "afflicted" with a mutation, Dio did not see it as a curse. It made him better than the worthless humans that treated him like human garbage. He had seen the worst of humanity as a small child: people who would rather spit on him than spare so much as a glance. He no longer had to consider himself among those sickening wastes of resources. The gift bestowed upon him allowed him to get where he stood now, after all.
He shot a vicious look to a fellow student that was offering to carry Dio's bags for him. Everyone was beneath him, he did not need their charity or their assistance. He needed to make it known exactly what his intentions were and how things would be from then on. The look was not enough and Dio grabbed the student's wrist.
"Don't touch the things of someone you don't know. You don't know what kind of person they may be," he said, twisting the student's hand.
He only let go when the boy started to cry. Dio found himself disgusted by the way the other ran off. Not even so much as a hint of defiance...It made things easier, sure, but less interesting. Not everyone would submit so easily, but it was a good start.
